Inexorable 05:23
Inexorable In an ever setting mould, Sinatra watching me I will wear my soul on my sleeve, this way is not my colour Tarred with the same old brush, the picture painted many times And I’ll put on my bravest face, don’t knock it til you’ve tried it son Oh no I’m sleeping in my clothes again Yeah I think I’m slipping Is it the sand that’s shifting or me? This rope’s not gripping I think I’m sinking slowly down Now the flickering’s starting to fade, the orange patches blur And the blinkers loosening now, the light that once was blinding me Now this view’s not too bad at all, don’t know what my problem was And I can’t seem to find the knob, still I’ll keep on trundling on I think I spoke too quietly again Yeah I think I’m slipping Is it the sand that’s shifting or me? This rope’s not gripping I think I’m sinking slowly down Yeah I think I’m slipping Is it the sand that’s shifting or me? This rope’s not gripping I think I’m sinking slowly down

On Reflection I see you look at me, through that china frame I’ve seen you here before, time and time again I know your name, what’s your game? Every time you’re there, filling my head with doubts All these questions rise, I just can’t keep them out I know your name, what’s your game? Why won’t you tell me, what’s going on in your head? Give me a reason, or are you already dead? Won’t you leave me alone, leave me alone Please What’s your game? Don’t wanna cry no more, I’ve just had enough You show me that I’m weak, when I thought that I was tough I know your name, what’s your game? So hard to forget, why can’t you be ignored Look what you’ve done to me, it’s all your fault! I know your name, what’s your game? Why won’t you tell me, what’s going on in your head? Give me a reason, or are you already dead? Won’t you leave me alone, leave me alone Please What’s your game? Please What’s your game? What’s the point, where’s your plan? Where are you going? (Have you got anything in mind?) When you get there what then, What will you do with your life? What's the point? Won’t you leave me alone Please What’s your game?

Coming Apart 03:35
Coming Apart Trace, the shadow of a lonely day You cry for a taste of what you see You’re coming apart, You don’t know what you believe Drifting like the victim Of somebody else’s dream Stuck with regret, and no new way You cry for a taste of what you see You’re coming apart, You don’t know what you believe Drifting like the victim Of somebody else’s dream You’re coming apart, you don’t know what you believe You’re coming apart, you don’t know what you believe You’re coming apart, you don’t know what you believe Drifting like the victim of somebody else’s dream.

Rat Race 03:46
Rat Race Moving on up to the big town Going down south where the land is dear You know a place, can’t hardly be found You gotta have the cash to get anything here Now you’re coming up the ladder, rung by rung You stop rock bottom, and head for the sky It’s dog eat dog if you wanna get along You move up quick before you’re kicked in the air Join the rat race Join the rat race, it’s all in your face Join the rat race Join the rat race, you gotta keep with the pace Take with the left hand, and punch with the right You swindle the young, and rip off the old As you polish your halo, you seem real nice You’re a shark in a suit, swimming round a goldfish bowl Rat race, rat race Rat race, rat race Now you’ve made it to the top and you’ve got your flash car You’ve got enough plastic for a LEGO world You’re so alone, in your suburban flat You’ve got all you want, now what was it for? Join the rat race Join the rat race, come on fight for your place Join the rat race Join the rat race, it’s not about grace Join the rat race Join the rat race, it’s all in your face Join the rat race, come on fight for your place Join the rat race, you gotta keep with the pace Join the rat race, it’s not about grace!

Need 07:16
Need I see a little boy, sitting in a cardboard box Now he’s got no mother there, to mend his socks At the age of innocence, young girl so sweet Now she sells herself, to drunks on the street Where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone? I need much more so I sing this song Where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone? Without the hope of love I can’t go on Tearstained faces twisted in pain Gather round the grave While bloodstained hands held high in prayer Are killing in the name of faith What kind of faith is this? To cause so much pain Where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone? I need much more so I sing this song Where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone? Without the hope of love I can’t go on Children starve in the cold of winter Violence spreads and disease is rife Yet gunshots still echo through the rubble and broken glass Increasing the strife The tools of war and hate Seem more precious than life Where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone? I need much more so I sing this song Where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone? Without the hope of love I can’t go on I see a man, appalled by the scenes he sees every night on TV He stuffs his face in his cosy home, sits back, says “too bad” and drinks tea in sympathy When will we learn to love someone Someone else but Me? Where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone? We need much more so we sing this song Where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone, where’s the love gone? Without the hope of love this world goes wrong This world goes wrong

Afraid To Fly Running all day in this crystal maze I lost my way and I don't know where to go, oh no My sense of direction, my thoughtful inspection Is full of perplexion When I think it through Don't you? I follow this road with my heavy load Kick a stone, drag my tired feet In the heat I stumble and fall, reduced to a crawl Give out a call, begging on my knees Help me please Then I lift my eyes to see It is, my friend, no mystery And I ask you for the way And this is what I hear you say You’ve got to be strong It’s time to move on So keep holding on The good times will come Sat in this cage, filling with rage Stuck on a stage Trying to write my script Ill-equipped I pull out a pen, but nobody cares They all sit and stare At my tragedy Hopelessly Then I see your friendly face Will I get out of this place? With a deep and heartfelt sigh You smile back with this reply You’ve got to be strong It’s time to move on So keep holding on The good times will come You wait until the sun goes down Before you can see the stars You wait until the raindrops fall Before the rainbow comes This is what I say to you If you’re ever feeling blue I’ll be with you, never fear And this advice then you will hear You’ve got to be strong It’s time to move on So keep holding on The good times will come You’ve got to be strong It’s time to move on So keep holding on The good times will come

Gotta See The Sun Gotta see the sun before you go, Gotta see the mountains shine Before you go back to the ones you know Let me show you this place of mine Gotta see the sun hang so high A thousand feet above the sea Sit on the cliffs, and watch the seagulls Fly above you and me So just lie back, and let the waters close above your eyes Just lie back, and let the waters close above your eyes Yes just lie back, and let the seaweed tangle up your mind Coz the sky’s alight, the hills are filled with rain And it’s alright Gotta see the sun before you go, Gotta see the mountains shine Before you go back to the ones you know Let me show you this place of mine Gotta see the sun hang so high A thousand feet above the sea Sit on the cliffs, and watch the seagulls Fly above you and me So just lie back, and let the waters close above your eyes Just lie back, and let the waters close above your eyes Yes just lie back, and let the seaweed tangle up your mind Coz the sky’s alight, the hills are filled with rain And it’s alright

about

The debut album by Durham rock band Mint.

"Leaving It Late" was recorded in 2001 in a summer of high global tension. Lyrically, the album was a cry for peace, love and understanding, with the centrepiece, Need, delving deep into ethics and social responsibility. Other songs (Coming Apart, Inexorable) dealt with the dilemmas of youth and young manhood. Afraid To Fly set a manifesto for dealing with whatever life might throw at you. There was also a theme of departure, yet reassurance, in Gotta See The Sun, written following a hazy summer trip to Dunraven Bay in South Wales.

Review of Leaving It Late
by Hans Werksman of herecomestheflood.com

"Rock quintet Mint were a student band at Trevelyan College, Durham University, UK. They recorded an album in 2001, a quick-and-dirty job that took them three days at Crossgate Centre Studios in Durham City..

Guitarist Richard Thomas dug it out for a 15th anniversary re-release, and it's a nice snapshot of what five politically conscious guys with a soft spot for classic rock were about back then.

Rat Race is the best song, going through various moods to show real concern about the pressure to make it. The funky Afraid To Fly as a close second.

They were on the brink to step into the real world, once their student days were over. That perspective must have filled them with some apprehension and music helped them to cope - besides having a lot of fun as captured in video footage of one of their last gigs, on the roof of Trevelyan College.

Powered by cheap beer and cheesy corn snacks, Mint were in a class of their own".
